Bambu Lab AMS filament backup (auto-refill)

When a spool runs out in the middle of a long plate, the AMS can continue from another slot with the same filament instead of pausing. On a farm that is the difference between a finished plate in the morning and a printer waiting all night.

What it does

With filament backup switched on, the printer treats AMS slots with the same material type and colour as one supply. When the active spool runs out, it loads the next matching slot and carries on with the same plate.

What it needs

  • The option switched on for the printer: it is in the printer's AMS settings in Bambu Studio or Bambu Handy (the name differs a little between versions).
  • A second spool of the same material type and the same colour in another slot.
  • The AMS must know both spools: Bambu Lab spools are read automatically, other brands need their type and colour set for the slot.

Why it sometimes does not switch

  • The colours differ, even slightly, or one slot is set to a different material.
  • The second slot is empty or was never identified.
  • The option is off on that printer; it is a setting of each printer, not of the file.

Without a matching spool the printer pauses and waits for you to load filament, which is exactly what happens when the option is off.

Using it on a print farm

Farmit shows every AMS tray with material, colour and remaining filament for each printer, so you can see at a glance which printers have a second spool ready.

  • Load two spools of your best-selling colour in printers that run long plates.
  • Keep material types and colour names consistent across printers.
  • Check remaining filament before night shifts.
