Raspberry Pi as a 3D printer farm gateway

A gateway is the piece of a farm that lives next to the printers. A Raspberry Pi is ideal for it: small, silent, a few watts, and on all the time. Here is the whole setup.

What you need

  • Raspberry Pi 4 or 5 with 2 GB RAM or more and its power supply.
  • A 16 GB or larger microSD card.
  • Ethernet or Wi-Fi in the same network as your printers.
  • A free Farmit.io account.

Install the system

  1. 1Flash Raspberry Pi OS Lite (64-bit) with Raspberry Pi Imager.
  2. 2In the Imager settings enable SSH, set a user and, if needed, your Wi-Fi.
  3. 3Boot the Pi next to the printers and log in: ssh [email protected]

Install and pair the gateway

In Farmit open Setup, choose Raspberry Pi and create your install command. It contains a one-time pairing code valid for 15 minutes. Paste it on the Pi:

$ curl -fsSL https://farmit.io/install.sh | sudo bash -s -- --cloud-url https://farmit.io --token fge_…

The installer checks the download's SHA-256, installs Node.js if needed, creates a system service that starts at boot and pairs the gateway.

Add printers

Each printer is added once on the Pi. Credentials are typed on the Pi and never sent to Farmit.io.

  • Bambu Lab: farmit-gateway printer add --host IP --serial SERIAL
  • Prusa: farmit-gateway printer add --type prusalink --url http://IP
  • Klipper: farmit-gateway printer add --type moonraker --url http://IP:7125
  • OctoPrint: farmit-gateway printer add --type octoprint --url http://IP

Why it is safe

  • Outbound HTTPS only: no port forwarding, VPN or fixed public IP.
  • Printer passwords and Access Codes stay on the Pi, readable only by the service.
  • Every command has an id and runs at most once, even after a reboot.

Keep it running

A Pi restarts by itself after a power cut. Make sure it gets the correct time from the internet (secure connections need it), and update it with the upgrade script that comes with each release (sudo ./scripts/upgrade.sh): pairing and printers are kept, and it rolls back by itself if the new version does not start.

Questions

Can I use a PC instead?

Yes: Windows, macOS or Linux, as long as the computer stays on and does not sleep while you print.

How many printers can one Pi handle?

All printers in its network. The gateway mostly waits for status messages, which a Pi 4 handles easily.
